Church And State is coming to Tasmania, Friday night and all day Saturday, 5 & 6 April 2024! This ministry has been arming Christians to influence culture since 2018 with first class speakers from around Australia and overseas.

This unique conference will include special presentations from the Hon Eric Abetz, Archbishop Julian Porteous, ACL’s Michelle Pearse, former Victorian MLC  & FFP lead senate candidate Bernie Finn, Bob McCoskrie from New Zealand’s peak family advocacy group, CAS founder Dave Pellowe and more!

Includes times for Q&A/panels and extended networking over wonderfully catered breaks on Saturday.

” The Lord was amazed to see no one intervened…”

Many Scriptures like this in Isaiah 59:14-16 reveal the Church should not be apolitical (not interested or involved in politics). But what more does the Bible say about God’s people and politics, or the important public issues our communities are facing?

There is a pressing need for sound teaching on Biblical doctrines of government, church and family. Church And State is encouraging Christians in every electorate to abandon blind political loyalties and instead carefully steward the gifts of democracy as Jesus would in our place.

Program

Friday night (6-9pm) is a dynamic introduction to the mission and message of Church And State with a particularly evangelical message for a culture lost and blind without Christ. CAS Founder Dave Pellowe opens the evening followed by ACL CEO Michelle Pearse. The preaching is concluded by Tasmanian Ps Mark Powell before an engaging panel featuring Eric Abetz, Archbishop Julian Porteous, Bob McCoskrie and Christopher Brohier. Pre-service worship will be happening as you take your seats from 5:30.

Saturday (9am-5:30pm) includes a speeches and sermons from a broader selection of Tasmania’s and Australia’s most sought after Christian speakers and topic experts. Speakers include the Hon Eric Abetz opening the morning, Bob McCoskrie, Dr David Daintree and Bernie Finn before a 90 minute break from lunch.

The 3rd session begins at 12:45 sharp with Michelle Pearse, Mark Powell, Archbishop Porteous and David Daintree in a panel on the Challenge of Reformation. Christopher Brohier will then expose the serious problems with ‘affirmation therapy’ being hidden by many experts and the leading nations moving to ban or restrict it, and ask why Australian elites are failing their duty of care and what we can do to help bring Australia into line. Before afternoon tea, the conference will explore the big question of how Australians might have responded to the alarmism of media and bureaucracy in Covid years if we had been God-righteous and humble beneath God.

The 4th and concluding session starts at 3:45pm with a keynote sermon from Archbishop Julian Porteous titled, “Protecting our democracy“. Our democratic system of government relies upon a sound basis of moral and intellectual integrity, provided by its Christian foundations. We are witnessing our society abandoning a defence of human life and denying the nature of the human person as defined by their biological sex. For our democracy not to fall into a dictatorship we need to assert and defend the Truth about human life. Christians have a vital role to play in the political process.

CAS panels are always popular, and you won’t want to miss the final segment of CAS Hobart ’24 with Eric Abetz, Bernie Finn, Dave Pellowe and a surprise speaker tackling some very practical strategies for effectivism, how you can wisely be more effective in being  salt and light in the public square as Jesus taught us all.

That wraps up the conference, but all are welcome to buy a ticket to the exclusive Senders’ Dinner one hour later at a nearby venue. There you’ll get to dine with most of the CAS Hobart speakers and help raise funds to send Church And State further around Australia and the internet.

Speakers

The Hon Eric Abetz is one of Australia’s most consistently principled, Christian conservatives over a lifetime of public service, often at great personal expense. A lawyer by trade, Eric worked on farms & drove taxis while at university. He was a Senator for Tasmania from 1994 to 2022, and was appointed to many roles including the Special Minister of State and Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation, Deputy Leader and then Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, and Leader of the Government in the Senate.

Archbishop Julian Porteous is the descendant of forebears who arrived in Tasmania from England in 1853. Ordained as a priest in 1974, he has always been actively involved in evangelisation, particularly among young people, and helped establish the Christopher Dawson Centre for Cultural Studies to advance the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. He has successfully defended false accusations for faithfully teaching what God says about marriage & gender.

Michelle Pearse is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Christian Lobby, a Christian organisation that works strategically to lobby lawmakers and policymakers around Australia to ensure that Christian values influence the way Australians are governed and carry out business. As a dynamic leader and speaker, she is passionate about changing culture and transforming society through the truth of the gospel. Michelle possesses a wealth of experience that traverses public policy, leadership, and Christian Ministry. In her twenties, Michelle was ACL’s Western Australia State Director and National Spokesperson for Women’s and Children’s Issues. She also worked in an advisory role for a member of Parliament in Western Australia before moving to London with her husband to pastor a church for five years. Sequel to this, Michelle returned to Australia as CEO of ACL.

Dr David Daintree AM is Director of the Hobart-based Christopher Dawson Centre for Cultural Studies, a think tank established to promote the Christian intellectual tradition as an essential component of Western civilisation. He is a past president of Campion College, Australia’s one-and-only liberal arts college which offers one of the best arts degrees in Australia. He has a background in classics and teaches Late and Medieval Latin. Dr. Daintree was a visiting professor at the universities of Siena and Venice.

Bernie Finn is a political veteran and shadow minister, having served Victorians from 2006 to 2022 when Liberal Party leaders booted him from the party for the high crime of publicly praying for an end to the abortion industry. Liberal members then preselected and elected Moira Deeming to the same electorate. Bernie is an advocate for the primacy of families and the value of Christian ethics in public policy, and is standing for election again with the re-formed Family First Party as their lead Senate candidate in Victoria.

Bob McCoskrie is a seasoned campaigner for cultural and political reformation, and the founder & national director of the peak family advocacy organisation, Family First New Zealand. Bob’s background is in education, youth social work, and talkback radio. Concerned with research and education, Family First NZ offers Kiwi families a strong voice for their concerns about marriage breakdown, media standards, freedom, and the many dangerous beliefs imposed by wokeism.

Ps Mark Powell is passionate about God’s Word and communicating its life changing riches in a clear and challenging way. He is frequently published in the secular political magazine, the Spectator Australia, where his articles often appear in the most popular list. Ps Mark has a comfortable ability to articulate Truth about contentious issues to a wider audience. Mark is the associate minister at Cornerstone Presbyterian Community Church in Hobart.

Christopher Brohier is the South Australia director of ACL, a barrister, and a founder of the Wilberforce Foundation, a think tank which advocates for the preservation of common law rights and freedoms. He successfully represented a street preacher against the City of Launceston in the Federal Court, and was counsel for Reverend Campbell Markham and the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in the discrimination case they faced in Hobart.

Dave Pellowe founded Church And State Ministries in 2016 to help solve the teaching gap in many Christians about the Biblical basis for faithfully stewarding the gifts of a liberal democracy. Dave produces and presents The Church And State Show weekly on The Good Sauce and ADH TV. Dave also convenes the annual Australian Church And State Summit in Brisbane and intervening conferences around Australia.

This Church And State conference is made possible and more affordable than comparable conferences thanks to the generous donors who give a little or a lot extra when they buy their ticket, faithful monthly Senders, and especially these major sponsors. Please support them too!
