Politicians Are Not Shepherds | A Message to Christian Voters

This sermon is a prophetic call for the Church in Queensland — and across Australia — to recover its responsibility in the public square. The central argument is that the condition of a nation reflects the condition of its pulpits. When churches burn with righteousness, nations flourish. When pulpits grow cautious, polite and silent on contested issues, injustice advances.

Referencing Alexis de Tocqueville’s observation that America’s greatness flowed from pulpits “aflame with righteousness,” the message argues that national decline is not first a political failure but a spiritual one. If a nation ceases to be good, it will cease to be great. Therefore, the Church must disciple the debate by declaring clearly what God says about right and wrong.

The sermon confronts abortion in Queensland as an urgent moral crisis that cannot be sanitised or strategically ignored. Emotional discomfort is not bad; it is evidence of a functioning conscience. Silence in the face of injustice is not compassion—it is complicity.

Politically, the message rejects blind partisanship and passivity. Politicians are not shepherds; they are public servants accountable to justice. In a democracy, citizens share in governance. Voting is not merely civic participation but stewardship before God. Christians must evaluate leaders by truth, righteousness, and uprightness—not party loyalty or political strategy.

If you are serious about loving your neighbour and seeking first the Kingdom of God, do not miss the next Church And State conference near you.

Biblical examples frame the call to courage. Esther risked her life rather than preserve influence. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused compromise even under threat. Joshua learned that God does not automatically endorse His people when they disobey. Solomon prayed not for prosperity but for wisdom to distinguish right from wrong in governing.

The sermon warns that political pragmatism can become moral compromise. God is not partisan; He sides with righteousness. Christians must align with Him rather than expect Him to endorse their political tribe.

Isaiah 1 provides the prophetic climax: God rejects worship that coexists with injustice. Yet the same chapter offers hope—“Though your sins are scarlet, they shall be white as snow.” Judgment and mercy stand together.

The message closes pastorally. Those burdened by guilt are confronted with the seriousness of sin but invited to the cross, where forgiveness and restoration are found. Obedience does not earn salvation; it flows from it.

Ultimately, the sermon calls the Church, its voters, and its leaders to repentance, courage, and obedience—because a nation’s future depends not on strategy, but on righteousness.
